ESL Resources for Teaching Spanish Speakers

Do your students say things like, “Do you want that I shut the door?” or “My boss wants that I work late.” ?

In this lesson plan, students will master the "want someone to" structure.

It starts with a fun listening task to present the grammar, followed by some controlled practice exercises.

They'll then participate in a fun group speaking task where they’ll be presented with different situations, and they have to choose the right person for the job. Do they want the fun babysitter, or the cheap one? The taxi driver with dents in their car, or the one who drives so slowly they might miss their flight? This will really push them to use the target structure (e.g., "I want ___ to babysit my kids" or "I want ___ to drive me to the airport").

Finally, they'll personalise the language by writing and sharing sentences about themselves and their own lives. This lesson plan has worked really well with our students and led to lots of interesting discussions, and we hope your students enjoy it, too.
